Jamestown Disaster

It seems as if one of the reasons that Jamestown failed was that none of the colonists planned on staying. According to tales, the New World was full of gold, ready to be pulled out of the ground. Because of this, growing food was a low priority. When Malaria further weakened them, the strength of those that weren't killed was so limited that they could do little work. The natives weren't as friendly as the ones in New England, either. I don't understand how the settlement could have been so poorly planned.
