Religion/Government of New England

In the eyes of the New England Puritans, religion and government were basically indistinguishable. Laws were often set strictly around theological beliefs, and woe be unto he or she that broke them. These laws also set traditions, such as family structure. As was typical of that time period, men were often in charge of the family, making most of the major decisions. However, in Puritan beliefs, men and women were spiritually equal. This wasn't apparent in government, however, as men kept control securely with themselves. The government itself was led by religious leaders. I wonder, though. Did any women gain prominent roles as religious leaders?
